Optometric Physicians
are eye and vision specialists who are the "general practitioners" of primary eye care. After university training, these physicians complete optometry school with internship and some optometric physicians complete post doctoral residency programs.

Optometric physicians concentrate on the "medical" management of the human eye and provide primary eye care for patients with eye infections and injuries, and those people needing glaucoma management. They also provide routine eye exams and contact lens care and issue eyeglass, contact lens, and medicinal prescriptions.  They also conduct pre-operative and post-operative follow-up care.

Ophthalmologists
are the surgical eye care specialists at Eye Center South. After university training, these physicians complete medical school with internship and a specialized residency program concentrating on the surgical management of the human eye and eyelids. Many of these specialists complete post doctoral surgical fellowship programs such as "cornea and external eye diseases," "vitreo-retinal," and "ocular plastic surgery" to list a few.

Ophthalmologists provide "secondary" and "tertiary" eye care (surgery, major eye infections, injuries, retinal problems) working in cooperation and consultation with the "primary" optometric physician.

Ophthalmic Technicians and Assistants
are among our most important resources at Eye Center South. After several years of formal training and certification testing, they are fully qualified to take medical histories, check visual acuity and perform advanced testing. Many of our assistants have received training to expand their clinical roles in our practice.

As a patient at Eye Center South, your eye care will be coordinated between the technicians and doctors. On most visits you will see your primary care eye doctor along with the ophthalmic assistant who will assist the doctor with measurements, updating your medical records, and other records of your care.

Opticians
are the talented staff who help our patients choose flattering eyewear, adjust eyeglasses, repair broken parts of a frame, manufacture lenses to fit into the frames, and perform all the technical aspects of having eyeglasses and patients' eyes work together.  They take the information to construct the eyeglasses  or dispense contact lenses from a prescription written by the eye doctor (either optometric physician or ophthalmologist).
